"a story I will tell my children": World War II. In these three words, the worst tragedy in the history of mankind is contained. In those three words can be heard the cries, screams and groans of many millions of people. I am proud that I had the opportunity to see war veterans and hear first-hand what they went through. We must remember those terrible years forever. I will tell my future children everything about that war and about those who were there. Where should I start my story?
Sunday. The previous day schools had held graduation parties. The waltzes sounded off, and yesterday's tenth-graders went to greet the dawn. At 3 hours and 45 minutes the sun rose over Moscow. In 15 minutes German planes opened the flaps and bombs fell on the cities. The Great Patriotic War had begun....
"Attention, this is Moscow. We are transmitting an important government message. Citizens and women of the Soviet Union! Today at 4 a.m., without any declaration of war, the German armed forces attacked the borders of the Soviet Union. The Great Patriotic War of the Soviet people against the Nazi invaders has begun. Our cause is right, the enemy will be defeated. Victory will be for us!". These words, which were said on 22 June 1941 by Levitan Yuri Borisovich, announced to the whole country the beginning of the war.
War asks no name, no age, no gender. It does not care who is standing next to it...Whether it is a woman, an old man or a child, war is merciless to all living things.
We children of the 21st century do not know what war is. We have only heard about it and it is hard for us to imagine what our people had to endure during the long years of the most terrible war, what incredible strength and courage our people have, who managed to defeat the fascist armada, many times more powerful and armed. We do not know what hunger is... Daily, exhausting hunger, which was experienced by the inhabitants of freezing Leningrad.
We don't know what fear is... Every minute fear for our relatives and friends who were ready to give their lives for the sake of Victory.
May such a war never happen again! It will never happen again if we, grateful descendants, remember and honour the memory of our heroic ancestors who saved the world from fascism, and feel personally responsible for preventing the distortion of the history of the Great Patriotic War.
